Description This full-size Regency billiard table originally had an oak bed, but in the late 1820s, when new innovations were being introduced to improve the game, it was converted to slate. The thickness of the slate laid on the substantial oak beams slightly raised the level of the table and necessitated a slight realignment of the bolts along the sides which are concealed by differentially turned cover buttons. The whole structure is supported on six turned and reeded legs. Below the cushion-rail at the table end is a carved plaque with a raised inscription 'GILLOWS / No 1081'.
