Skaters 1947

This is one of a number of small watercolours the artist sent to his Lancaster friends, Charles and Jessie Barrow, at Christmas. He signed his work:

The winter of 1947 was one of the most severe on record. It came at a difficult time when people were coping with post-World War II fuel and food shortages. Here, however, the artist has captured a moment of light relief with people enjoying the opportunity to skate on a frozen lake.
