Lancaster from Cable Street

This oil painting, by Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1758-1817), depicts Lancaster as seen from Cable Street. The view includes Lancaster Castle and Priory Church in the background, and a group of people with horses and cattle in the foreground.

The ship on the right is on the stocks in Brockbanks' ship yard on the Green Ayre. This shows just how close ship building was to the town centre and how it would have dominated the locality.
