Collecting is core to the work we do in museums. New material is being added to our collections all the time.
We are always grateful for offers of new items. Potential acquisitions are carefully considered, to ensure that they meet the criteria in our Collecting Policy.
There are many things to consider, such as the significance and condition of the objects, and whether we have sufficient storage space. We also look to see if we already have similar objects wthin our collection. It may be that the items are more appropriate to other museum collections in our region.
We currently have more than 250,000 items in our collections, covering a large range of subject areas and interests. Display space is precious, which means that only a fraction of our collections can be on display at any one time.
We highlight below some of our more significant recent acquisitions.
